The Marine Mammal Physiology Project has housed a variety of animal species over the years. In an effort to redirect animals that were unsuccessful in the wild, the project offered them a new role: to be an ambassador of research for their entire species.
As the name suggests, the research conducted with the resident species is exclusive to marine mammals. However, the animal residents housed at the Long Marine Lab are not limited to those of marine environments. In addition to the marine mammals in our facility, a variety of exotic birds receive care as well. Animal care volunteers and trainers provide care, enrichment, and behavioral conditioning for all of the residents of the project which include:
Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)
